Kharge Pays Tribute to Narasimha Rao, Hails His Role in Shaping Modern India

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday paid heartfelt tributes to former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao on his 104th birth anniversary, lauding his transformative leadership and lasting contributions to India’s economic and strategic development.

In a post on X, Kharge credited Rao with ushering in a new era of national growth through bold economic liberalisation policies during his tenure as Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996.

“We pay our tributes to Former Prime Minister, P. V. Narasimha Rao, on his birth anniversary. His government’s far-reaching economic liberalisation policies were instrumental in catalysing an era of unprecedented national growth,” Kharge wrote.

Highlighting Rao’s impact on India’s socio-economic fabric, the Congress President noted that the reforms played a critical role in uplifting the middle class and strengthening the nation’s economic resilience.

“These reforms were pivotal in the upliftment and expansion of the middle class, thereby laying a robust foundation for a more formidable and resilient India,” Kharge added.

He also commended Rao’s contributions in other key areas, including advancements in India’s nuclear programme and strategic shifts in foreign policy, such as the initiation of the “Look East” policy.

“His tenure was distinguished by significant advancements in India’s nuclear program and several forward-thinking foreign policy endeavours,” Kharge stated. “His vital role in the progress and strengthening of our nation shall always be remembered.”

Born on June 28, 1921, in Karimnagar, Telangana, Rao was a scholar, advocate, and seasoned politician. Before becoming Prime Minister, he served in several crucial portfolios including Law, Education, Defence, Home Affairs, and Human Resource Development. He is remembered as a pivotal figure in India’s transition to a more open and globally integrated economy.
